The Santiago de Chile Cathedral is located on a site surrounded by the Bandera, Cathedral, and Plaza de Armas streets. The present structure dates back to1748. Earlier buildings were built on the same site but were destroyed by earthquakes or fire. Inside the Cathedral, one highlight is the main altar, built in Munich, Germany and fashioned of white marble and bronze with lapis lazuli. You won’t want to miss the chapel for The All Holy, a copy of the Saint John and Saint Paul Martyrs chapel in Rome; or the mahogany organ, manufactured by Jesuits in the 18thcentury.
After the coup, La Moneda Palace recovered a large part of its original structure. This project of neoclassical architecture was designed by Joaquín Toesca and Agustín Cavallero and has been the seat of presidential government in Chile since 1922. It was designated a historical monument in 1951 and bombarded by air in 1973 during the coup organized by the Military Junta to overthrow Allende.
The Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art is dedicated to the preservation and study of pre-Colombian cultures and also educates visitors on this artistic legacy. Founded by architect and collector Sergio Larraín García-Moreno, the museum has one of the world’s largest collections of cultural relics from the Aztecs, Incas, Mayas, Mapuches and Rapa Nui.
These are just a few examples of what you can expect to see during your vacation in this prosperous city.
